
In February 2016, the Northern Nevada Business Weekly featured NCLab in an article titled “Reno firm brings computer education down from the cloud.” Re-reading that article today offers an incredible moment of reflection on where we started, how far we’ve come, and why our core mission remains unchanged.
Back then, the standard approach to technical education relied heavily on passive lectures, textbook theory, and complex software installations that created barriers for students and educators alike. We set out to change that. We believed then—just as we do now—that the most effective way to learn STEM, coding, data wrangling, and other hands-on skills is by doing.
Here’s a look back at the core principles that shaped our foundation and continue to drive our work today:
1. Learning by Doing Beats Passive Consumption
From day one, we rejected the idea that sitting through hours of video lectures prepares someone for a real-world technical career. We built NCLab around interactive, self-paced learning environments where learners write code, build models, and analyze data right from step one.
2. Immediate Feedback Drives True Mastery
By delivering our platform through the cloud, we eliminated local software setups and enabled instant, automated feedback. When a learner encounters a roadblock, they receive immediate guidance to help them self-correct. This competency-based model ensures that learners master every concept before moving on to the next.
3. Empowering Educators as Mentors
Our goal has never been to replace teachers or instructors, but to empower them. By automating grading and progress tracking, NCLab frees educators from lecturing so they can step into the role of mentors. Our partner teachers are enabled to provide personalized support exactly when and where learners need it most.
4. Closing the Skills Gap for Everyone
Whether working with K-12 students discovering computational thinking for the first time or adults retraining for high-demand careers in data analytics and programming, our goal has always been accessibility. Breaking down complex technical concepts into achievable, bite-sized steps opens doors to new career opportunities for people from all backgrounds.
