This Saturday we participated in a STEAM Expo at the Coral Academy of Science in Reno. For those who do not know, STEAM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics. The Expo was impressive. Our estimate of the attendance was well over a thousand people. Music could be heard everywhere, and it included a school band performing – that’s the A in STEAM. Exhibits included Lego robots, frozen bubbles, mechanical instruments of Physics, fractals and other examples of cool Math, and much more.
The only thing that we found a bit strange – our exhibit was the only one related to programming or computing. No other computers in the exhibit hall. But computing is an essence of STEM. Computing goes across all STEM areas. There is much to be improved. This just confirms that what we are trying to achieve with NCLab makes sense.
Some illustrative photos are below. Let’s start with the crowd:
There was an opera performance – believe it or not. And it was AWESOME! Students were great, but the teacher has done a miracle. It is just amazing to see such creativity – and it reinforces our deep respect for K-12 teachers.
